Never Go To The End Of A Festival With My Dad And My Uncle Bill

early work
Liner notesTrue story, this. My Uncle Bill was an absolute hero to me growing up -- always smart, always interesting, always opinionated, always principled. But also, after a day of booze and music with my dad, difficult to get into the car to get home. This has a reasonable claim to being the first song I ever played on stage.

Never go to the end of a festival
With my dad and my Uncle Bill
I did it once
And I hope you never will

Bill has an attitude
That really makes me cringe
He says the blues is just grumble,
Grumble grump whinge whinge whinge

Dad knows the words
But not the tune to every verse
Bill snores incessantly,
I don’t know which is worse

They’ve been drunk since lunch
They’ve come to see Bert Jansch
I’ve come to pick them up,
They can’t even say thanksh

They’re deciding where to go next,
I don’t get to choose
I’ve got the stuck at the end of a festival
With my dad and my Uncle Bill blues.
