Ruth, Babe

early work
Liner notesMy friend Ruth was annoyed that there weren’t any songs with “Ruth” in them. Tell me about it, babe! I wrote this as a gift. It feels a bit short, but I’m sure there were only two verses. I think it had a lovely guitar part, and I like the repetition in the verses.

Sometimes the bottle hits you back, sometimes the bottle mends
Sometimes it’s bottle that you lack, sometimes it’s your only friend
And it’s a long way to happiness from here unless you’re with me
But I’d run to the station and jump on the next train
In 24 hours, I could be with you again
I’d blaze a trail to your studio if I thought you’d like to see me again

So you packed your arty movie scenes, packed your music stands
You packed your horsey magazines and left the Netherlands
And it’s a long way to happiness from here unless you’re with me
But I’d run to the airport and jump on the next plane
In 24 hours, I could be with you again
I’d blaze a trail to America if I thought you’d like to see me again.
