Stupid And Young
Liner notes
I was processing some decades-old emotional trauma and the phrase 'Christ, what a mess' emerged. My go-to method for dealing with big emotions is writing a song, so I did, while keeping all of the phrases as generic as possible. I know what they mean. This originally had some much cruder self-recrimination.You can't blame me, it was her idea
She goaded me on, she held my beer
Mistakes were made, lessons learned
We played with fire and we both got burned
Goddamn but it stung, Christ what a mess
We were stupid and young, we thought we knew best
We thought we knew best
If I'd hesitated, I'd have been lost
The die was cast, the Rubicon crossed
She changed her mind, we hit the dirt
When you half-commit, that's when you get hurt
Goddamn but it stung, Christ what a mess
We were stupid and young, we thought we knew best
We thought we knew best
I lost control, I dropped my guard
I shot from the hip, I tried too hard
You can't blame me, it was her idea
She goaded me on, she held my beer
Goddamn but it stung, Christ what a mess
We were stupid and young, we thought we knew best
We thought we knew best, it all went to shit
Still I wouldn't change a single minute of it
Goddamn but it stung, Christ what a mess
We were stupid and young, we thought we knew best
We thought we knew best
