Talkin' Ari Fleischer's Scientific Inquisition Blues

one man's fight
Liner notesAri Fleischer was George W Bush's press spokesman and spent a lot of effort defending things that no reasonable person could possibly believe. I'm no constitutional scholar, so I doubt this is legally plausible. 2007 seemed impossibly far in the future then.

The Supreme Court's passed judgement down in Washington DC
On a subject that I must concede is pretty dear to me
'Cause I'm a rocket scientist in a research institution
And now I find that that work I do contravenes the Constitution.

It's the ideas of Galileo that they've suddenly found odd
And entirely incompatible with "one nation under God"
Explain it all you like, they say, prove it 'til you're weary --
But that the earth goes round the sun is really just a theory.

It started down in Texas where a retired Army colonel
Launched a dozen lawsuits against the Astrophysics Journal
He says the first amendment to the Constitution guarantees
His right to publish what he likes, to hell with the referees.

So there was Ari Fleischer looking smug on CNN
Explaining how the textbooks would all have to change again
And NASA's got a new machine, to launch 2007
The first faith-based initiative crewed mission up to heaven.

Now I've had to abandon all my heliocentric thought
I'm off to Cape Canaveral to become an astronaut
It's an awful lot of training but it will be worth the wait
Once we reach the landing ground beside the Pearly Gates
I'll ask to see the omniscient one, who know all there is to know
And ask him to defend me from his followers below.
